25 Years of Healing, Community, and Hope

This year, Plymouth Healing Communities turns 25!

For a quarter of a century, we’ve remained committed to our mission to provide affordable, stable housing for historically underserved people and champion companionship, equity, and belonging.

That mission has only been possible because of you: our donors, volunteers, partners, and community members who believe that every person deserves dignity and stability.

Twenty-five years is a long time in any organization’s life, but in our work, it’s more than a milestone.

It’s the accumulation of thousands of moments. Of meals shared, gardens tended, hallways walked together in laughter or in silence, and neighbors showing up for each other again and again.

A Resident With Tenure

When we say PHC is built on relationships, we mean it. Some of those relationships have lasted for many years. One of those is with a resident we’ll call “R,” who has been part of the PHC community for 16 years.

“It took me just about three months to decide to move in,” R remembers. “As I got to know the North Admiral neighborhood more, I fell in love with it. I’m convinced Admiral is not only the best area in West Seattle, but if I may be so bold, the world.”

For R, PHC became the longest home he’s ever had. In 2009, PHC began managing the building where he lived, and it became Admiral House, a place he’s belonged for the past 16 years.

Like many of us, R’s time here has had quiet seasons and transformative moments. He spent nearly 12 years as a self-described recluse before a chance encounter with a community companion coordinator shifted things.

“That was the start of things turning around,” R recalls. “I’m not a people person, but if someone means a lot to me, it goes the other way around.”

Gratitude for 25 Years of Support

Over the years, R has seen neighbors come and go. Some have become like siblings, others like buddies.

“It’s sad for a while when they leave,” he says. But what makes PHC feel like home is the loyalty and reliability he’s found in neighbors, in staff, and in companions like Sanjay, who has met with R almost weekly for nearly a decade, equating to over 500 shared moments of companionship.

Together, they talk about the beauty of Schmitz Preserve Park, the waterfalls, and the architecture that captures their imagination, reminders that home isn’t just about four walls, but also about the neighborhood and community you’re rooted in.

This kind of enduring connection is why PHC is still here after 25 years.

Since opening our first home in 2001, your generosity has fueled every step: from adding permanent supportive housing like Admiral House in 2009, to launching the Community Companion Program in 2011, to providing 44 permanent units of supportive housing today.

Because of you, residents like R feel safe, supported, and part of something bigger.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for every donation, every hour volunteered, every conversation, and every moment you’ve spent helping PHC grow into the community it is today.

Join Us for the Next Chapter

We celebrate this milestone with deep gratitude and with our eyes firmly on the future. The need for safe, supportive housing and companionship for people living with mental health challenges is greater than ever.

We remain committed to expanding our reach, strengthening our programs, and continuing to turn what feels like a dream into reality for our residents.

For R, that dream is “an ideal place to live.” For all of us at PHC, it’s the promise we work to fulfill every day through compassionate service and lasting relationships.

As we step into our next 25 years, your partnership will mean more stability, more connection, and more nights of peace for those who need it most.
